Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story was recently named a 2021 Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation.
The installation achieved the recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: forming a tree board department, creating tree-care ordnance, having an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and by having an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
“It’s an honor to be named a Tree City,” Installation Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Witherspoon said. “Planting trees is just one of the many actions we take to recognize the importance of being good stewards. We have proudly been a part of this program for 24 years.”
JEB Little Creek-Fort Story is one of more than 3,600 Tree City USA communities.
“Planting trees has many benefits,” said the JEB Little Creek-Fort Story Natural Resources Specialist Mary Edmonson. “Trees add beauty to our installation, increase the quality of the air we breathe, save on heating and cooling costs, enhances the quality of life, stabilize the ground, and provide habitat for wildlife.”
“In addition to planting trees, we support other environmental events and activities including Earth Day, Clean the Bay Day, the annual recycling of Christmas Trees to stabilize our dunes, and the sinking of used Christmas Trees in our lake to create a fish breeding habitat,” Edmonson said.
The recognition came with a citation identifying why the installation received the honor.
“Over the last few years, it has become increasingly clear of the value and importance that trees hold for our future,” The citation read. “Cities and towns across the globe are facing challenges in air quality, water resources, personal health and well-being, and energy use. Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story shows its residents and peers that they are forth-thinking and eager to combat these issues. By showing your education to urban forestry, you demonstrate a commitment to a brighter, greener future.”
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forrest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
