The Federal Library and Information Network FEDLINK has recognized Emily Shohfi as the 2021 Federal Librarian of the Year. Shohfi is a clinical librarian in the Darnall Medical Library at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The award acknowledges the innovative ways that federal libraries, librarians and library technicians play in fulfilling the information demands of government, business, scholarly communities and the American public.

Presenting the award, Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden said the work of a librarian involves a lot more than just stocking and distributing books. “Being a librarian has always been more than just about lending books. We are an authoritative source of knowledge that can enrich users in uncountable ways. We constantly strive to find new ways to share our extraordinary riches more broadly, deeply, and transparently. Our next winner has taken that calling to the highest levels,” she said.

“Our award winner is one of the bright stars of our profession and I am pleased to recognize Emily Shohfi, of the Darnall Medical Library at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as the 2021 Federal Librarian of the Year.

“Emily is dedicated to evidence-based practice, library utilization, and medical education scholarship, Hayden continued. “Embedded in nine different medical specialties and training programs, she trained over 400 physician trainees and 1,000 medical staff in Fiscal Year 2021.”

Shofi is also credited with conducting another 275 interactive didactics sessions to improve library resources, search strategies, and appraisal of the literature strategies, empowering trainees to care for approximately 360,000 patients with the best available medical evidence. She also served on three planning committees focused on advancing diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and advancing combat trauma research.

Beyond Shofi’s educational role, she responded to 720 questions about patient care, and conducted an additional 311 searches for project or research efforts and tailored databases and strategies for clinical questions, program-level practices, clinical reviews, and/or meta-analyses for original clinical research.
“I congratulate you for winning the well-deserved Federal Librarian of the Year award,” Hayden said.

Shohfi said she is “honored and humbled to receive the recognition, considering the number of truly outstanding librarians that are working with the federal government who are just as deserving. “I have the good fortune of working with several of them here at WRNMMC, and I am proud to serve in a specialized field with so many hardworking individuals dedicated to promoting knowledge,” she said.

Shohfi said the award means so much because of the work librarians get to do every day. “I feel I wear many hats in my role,” she said. “As a military librarian, my work supports the active duty and retired men and women who serve our country and their families. As a medical librarian, I have the honor of making a difference in the lives of our patients.

“As librarians, we are custodians and purveyors of knowledge, from cutting-edge to ancient,” she added. “And as federal employees, it is our duty to promote the public good and advance the public interest through the preservation and dissemination of knowledge, data, and evidence. Perhaps now more than ever, this role has never been more important. I am proud to be a part of that effort, and I am proud to be in it with so many fine library workers,” she said.

Shohfi has a master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), specialized in health resources and services, from the University of Pittsburgh, and a bachelor’s degree in English, with minors in political science and creative writing, from Duke University. Shohfi is also an assistant professor of medicine through Uniformed Services University and a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP).

Prior to joining Walter Reed Bethesda in 2018, Shohfi was a medical librarian at Boston Children’s Hospital.
