CAMP HANSEN, Okinawa, Japan - III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group Commanding Officer and Camp Hansen Base Commander Col. Lester “Ray” Gerber, relinquished command to Col. Richard Martin during a change of command ceremony June 17, 2022, on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan.

Gerber, who assumed command June 2020, ended two-years of dedicated service by welcoming Martin wholeheartedly and with a few words of advice.

“Trust the Marines of the MIG,” Gerber advised. “Give them guidance and leverage high expectations upon them, then give them room to attack. The return on this investment will be profound, and it will create a tempo unto itself that
    becomes self-sustaining momentum.”

Gerber said that during his term as the III MIG commander the unit was able to assume its’ critical role as a force that assured command and control, provisioning Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance in order to generate effects.

“In essence we focused on how we close kill chains; sensing, making sense, and acting and more importantly how we prevent an adversary from closing their kill
chains,” he said. “Taking that concept and putting it into practice was immensely gratifying.”

Gerber added that one of the MIG’s biggest accomplishments during his tenure was the unit organizing itself to support at echelon, adopting naval terminology to provide a task organized Task Unit centered around the MIG Headquarters and Task Elements centered around battalion headquarters.

“This allowed us to support a broad range of the MEF in a variety of conditions and locations, to include forming a composite company to support 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment's Service Level Training Exercise,” he said. “This was a fundamental shift in that the MIG didn't just provide disparate enablers to units, it provided task organized formations that brought multiple warfighting functions.”

Prior to assuming command of III MIG, Martin served as the commanding officer of 1st Marine Raider Support Battalion, Marine Raider Support Group. Martin is a native of Johnson City, Tennessee.

Martin said during his command III MIG will be focused on deterring potential adversaries and further enabling III MEF's warfighting capabilities.

“In the near term, we're going to experiment with new technologies that will make III MEF a much more capable force - and we're going to take every opportunity to find more ways to integrate our capabilities with the Joint Force and with our regional allies.”

III MIG is the vanguard of III MEF, operating in the Indo-Pacific region, supporting Marine Air Ground Task Force operations in the information environment with communications, intelligence, and supporting arms liaison capabilities.

III MIG leads the way as the character of warfare evolves across multiple warfighting functions.
