The American Red Cross, Services to the Armed Forces (SAF) have been delivering programs and providing comfort and support to members of the U.S. military, veterans, and their families for over 140 years; with offices on over 30 military installations across the globe. Nearly a third of the American Red Cross SAF workforce is required to maintain a special readiness status in case they need to deploy in support of our military members and their families. They must maintain special training, security clearances and a level of physical fitness and be ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

In many instances, these Red Crossers are the tip of the spear in delivering emergency communication messages to remote and difficult-to-reach troops anywhere in the world. So, flexibility and dynamism in the workforce are critical. The training they receive prepares them to provide resilience, morale, and welfare support activities in addition, to managing emergency communications cases in forward-deployed locations.

The conflict in Ukraine has shaped up to be the largest American Red Cross SAF response since the attacks on 9/11. As the Ukraine crisis continues, the American Red Cross SAF will stand ready to provide unwavering support for those military families and service members in need.

In March, the American Red Cross rapidly deployed 24 SAF mobile staff that are tasked with opening and establishing new sites to support the Ukraine crisis and to support the Department of Defense increasing its deployments of service members into Europe, and in support of NATO Allies.

The American Red Cross is committed to their enduring mission of ensuring that the tens of thousands of troops, deployed, will receive morale and welfare items. Because as long as the U.S. military has service members deployed, the Red Cross will be there with them.

We have the honor to have Ms. Lorie M. Warchol serving the troopers in Powidz. She can be reached at lorie.warchol@redcross.org
