The U.S. Army’s Program Executive Office Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) hosted Orlando-based military personnel and local healthcare and emergency medical response personnel for a medical simulation capabilities demonstration in Research Park on Feb. 16.

PEO STRI and the U.S. Army Simulation and Training Technology Center (STTC) in Orlando co-hosted the two-hour event to reinforce and expand the already strong relationships with their local community partners and to promote and prepare for the upcoming Joint Florida Regional Emergency Medical Exercise.

“We are looking at the modernization of how the Army does things,” said Col. Nick Kioutas, project manager for Synthetic Environment who kicked off the event. “We know where we want to go in the future and get the return on investment on the dollars we put into science and technology to get the products into the hands of the Soldiers who need them.”

Kioutas said recent events across the country like COVID-19, hurricanes, severe storms, tropical storms, floods, wildfires, earthquakes and major tornadoes have shown the importance of a coordinated medical response between all levels of government, local hospitals and other non-government agencies.

“We really want to make the medics quicker at doing triage,” he added. “There is a thing called the golden hour. If you can get a critically injured Soldier from the battlefield into a hospital within an hour their chance of survival goes way higher.”

The simulation technology on display during the demonstration highlighted how the Army can do realistic immersion training that reflects real-life scenarios and accurate battlefield injuries. Kioutas encouraged participants to take the opportunity to crosstalk with local government partners, academia, business and industry prior to the upcoming joint medical exercise.

Lt. Col. Rickey Christopher, PEO STRI product manager for Medical Simulation, said the event featured the latest in medical simulation technology, including the tactical combat casualty care mannequin, battlefield amputation trainer and the advanced canine mannequin.

“What PEO STRI does here in Orlando regarding simulation, training and instrumentation is very serious work,” Christopher said. “It brings realism to the customers by providing them realistic and life-like products.”

Christopher said he feels Orlando is the training and simulation capital of the world, and events like today help to leverage the capabilities available through government agencies, business and industry, and local universities. This helps to stay ahead of enemies and competitors around the world.

“Through these relationships we build collaboration and efficiencies in getting these products out jointly to all our customers,” Christopher said. “At the end of the day, we are helping to save lives on the battlefield.”

The Joint Florida Regional Emergency Medical Exercise is scheduled for April 21 and will include participation from PEO STRI, STTC, Orange County Office of Emergency Services, the University of Central Florida, U.S. Army Medical Recruiting Brigade, 44th Civil Support Team, 48th Civil Support Team, Advent Health, and local medical residency programs.

U.S. Army Program Executive Office Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI), headquartered in Orlando, Florida, leads a skilled and diverse workforce and works with high-caliber Army partners to enhance operational readiness and support the Army’s modernization efforts by fielding and sustaining the next generation of multi-domain operations testing, training and information operations capabilities.
