COMMAND OUTPOST SENJARAY, Afghanistan — Looking down at a child with life threatening injuries could rattle the nerves of anyone. Luckily for one small boy in the Zhari district of Kandahar Province though, the disciplined Soldiers at Command Outpost Senjaray had the necessary skills and composure to save his life.

Operating out of COP Senjaray, located along Highway 1, Soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division saw a civilian traffic accident happen down the road from their outpost.

"We witnessed the accident happen from our COP," said Sgt. Richard Randolph, non-commissioned officer in charge of operations for Company D of the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment.

"There was some traffic congestion and a motorized tricycle that was pulling kids in a cart was hit, or almost hit, by a truck," he said. "That flipped the cart and injured one of the kids."

Unsure how badly hurt the children were, Randolph immediately radioed a nearby convoy for help. Reaching the scene a medic began to administer first aid to the boy and soon determined the child needed to be evacuated to Senjaray for medical attention.

"They brought the child to our COP where we would be able to properly medevac him by air," said Randolph. "I put our aide station on alert and started to call for the medevac."

When the child arrived at Senjaray, the company medic was ready.

"When he arrived, he had a skull fracture from his right eye to the back right side of his skull," said Cpl. Timothy Cassidy, Co. D's medic. "He was bleeding pretty bad. We packed the wounds, started an IV and gave him antibiotics and just did whatever we could to get him ready to go to Camp Hero."

Camp Hero is where the Kandahar Regional Military Hospital, run by Afghan national security forces, is located.

Altogether, the Soldiers did everything they could to ensure the child's chances of living and had him on the helicopter within an hour of the accident.

Because of the Soldiers' quick actions the child was able to be flown to Kandahar Regional Military Hospital where doctors stabilized the child's health.

The child is now in stable condition at Mirwais Hospital in Kandahar City, thanks to the skilled and disciplined efforts of the Soldiers at COP Senjaray.
