When the countries participating in the 2022 Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), a joint multilateral exercise, gathered in Hawaii, United States, they all wanted to showcase the best their navies have.

However, the participating countries are also trying hard to show their good intentions and friendship to other RIMPAC participating countries. Through the national receptions event, the opportunity to implement this is wide open.

The Indonesian Navy, representing Indonesia as one of the participants of RIMPAC 2022, used their national reception event to promote Indonesia’s rich of cultural traditions.

The national reception held aboard its frigate, KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai (332), on July 9, the Indonesian Navy entertained the delegates who came with band performances, Balinese dance, Dayak dance, and its traditional martial arts: pencak silat. The Indonesian Navy also showcased their culinary skills for the guests who attended with Indonesian traditional culinary such as fried rice, satay, curry and various other cuisine.

During the event, the Indonesian Navy used Balinese decorations on the ship and put on Udeng – traditional headgear from Bali – on every person's head during the event, to honor the ship’s namesake I Gusti Ngurah Rai, an independence fighter and Indonesian hero from Bali who commanded Indonesian forces during the Indonesian War of Independence.

The enthusiasm of the guests to taste Indonesian cuisine was quite high; many of them had never tasted Indonesian cuisine before. Indonesian Navy Chief Petty Officer Metriono, who worked as a waiter at the event, was happy with the enthusiasm.

"It's really nice for guests to ask a lot of questions about traditional cuisine and taste it," said Chief Petty Officer Metriono. “I hope all of them loves it.”

The event, which was attended by Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Adm. John C. Aquilino, was rousing when at the end of the activity a flash mob of Poco-poco dance and Gemu Famire dance was held which made the guests dance together.

Lt. j.g. Shin Jeong Min from Republic Korea was one of the entertained guest that night.

“This is the best thing ever,” said Lt. j.g. Shin after finished the flash mob dance.

Meanwhile, the Commander of the Indonesian Navy's 2nd Fleet Rear Adm. T.S.N.B. Hutabarat who was also present at the activity said he was satisfied with the course of the event.

"This is the best Indonesian Navy ship national reception event that I have ever attended," he said.

He also thanked the service members of KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai (332) who had worked hard to carry out this event.

In his brief to the Indonesian Navy crew aboard KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai (332) after the event, he also emphasizes the priority of Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Yudo Margono that the involvement of Indonesian Navy in RIMPAC is one of the programs between Indonesian Navy and U.S. Navy in order to increase professionalism, strengthen cooperative relations, and externally have the objective to increase Indonesian Navy’s diplomacy role.
