MODESTO, Calif. (May 17, 2022) -- Andrew Schulz, a Peter Johansen High School graduate, was awarded the Marine Option Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship on May 17, 2022. The NROTC Scholarship, valued at over $180,000, is a highly competitive program with an acceptance rate of less than 20 percent.
“The sole purpose of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Program is to find, educate, and train qualified men and women with the fighting spirit to serve specifically as commissioned officers by affording them the opportunity to attain a higher education degree, full tuition paid, and a guaranteed career post-graduation,” said U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Hali McFadgen, executive officer for Recruiting Station Sacramento.
Andrew Schulz’s older brother, Jackson Schulz, also received the NROTC Scholarship in 2020 and currently attends the University of Kansas.
“It feels reassuring to know that any struggle I go through, he has as well,” said Andrew. “Obviously, I wish to carve my own path, but it’s nice knowing he’s done this as well.”
Andrew looks forward to the responsibility and reward that comes with serving as a Marine Corps Officer.
“I applied for the scholarship so I could pursue my academic dreams without sacrificing my dream of serving in the Marine Corps,” said Andrew.
Andrew will attend the University of South Florida, where he will continue his education and follow in his older brother’s footsteps of learning how to lead Marines.
