Veiled from sea spray and cordite, among windowless corridors, the Combined Forces Maritime Component Command (CFMCC) is the “operational brain” at Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2022, the world’s largest maritime warfare exercise.

Located in the K. Mark Takai Pacific Warfighting Center on Ford Island, Hawaii – a port of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Oahu – aviators, sailors and soldiers from various armed forces speak a common operational language of maritime coordination, development and implementation.

Maritime Operations Centre (MOC) Director Royal Australian Navy Captain Dave Tietzel is responsible for accomplishing all operational processes said the commitment from the multinational CFMCC team has been inspiring and rewarding.

“My job is to ensure the staff are ready to support the commander’s decision-making cycle,” said Tietzel, whose role at RIMPAC encompasses missions from amphibious operations to counter-piracy activities across the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California areas of operations. “This year marks the 28th iteration of the premier joint and combined maritime exercise. This world class maritime training environment will enhance the interoperability and interchangeability across the full spectrum of military operations in the maritime environment,” he said.

From India to Israel, more than 230 multinational military personnel from 19 nations work within CFMCC providing an effectual structure to support the MOC during RIMPAC 2022.

India Navy’s Commander Vijaya Jha works in the Future Operations (FOP) cell and said preparing the commander’s update brief, or CUB as it is coined, has been a unique and rewarding experience.

“I am very fortunate and privileged to be able to participate in RIMPAC 2022 and it is an honor to be amongst thorough professionals from all over the world,” Jha said. “As part of the FOP team, I have gained immense experience from the professional interactions with specialists across all domains.”

Jha said working with military members from around the world gave him an insight into other cultures.

“I am taking a lot of fond memories with me back home to India. MAHALO for the warm hospitality and support,” he said.

Current Operations Officer, Israeli Navy Lieutenant Commander Yoed Toren said his position at the CFMCC allowed him to partake in the command-and-control procedures of RIMPAC 2022 and support multinational efforts to assets at sea.

“This important exercise is a great opportunity to further enhance naval coalitions, learn and process new information and collaborate at a high international level,” said Toren. “We are grateful to the U.S. Navy and 3rd Fleet for hosting us and allowing the platform for cooperation between capable and adaptive partners. The relationships that are built during RIMPAC will allow the nations taking part, to value and benefit in great fashion for the upcoming future.”

Twenty-six nations, 38 ships, three submarines, more than 170 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 29 to Aug. 4 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2022 is the 28th exercise in the series that began in 1971.
