VICTORY BASE COMPLEX, Baghdad—Soldiers of Bravo Troop's quick reaction force, 1/82 Cavalry, 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, have the main mission of patrolling the interior of Victory Base Complex. On Oct. 14, 2009, they went out on one of their first patrols outside the base.
"Our main responsibility is the interior of the VBC. We respond to various calls to the entry control point," said Sgt. Eric Hemphill, truck commander, from Powell Butte, Ore. "We just started with the outside of the wall. We have a good idea of what the inside looks like."
The patrol looks for a variety of issues. On a previous patrol they found an area in the boundary surrounding the base that needed repair.
The information went to force protection. After the information went through the necessary channels the issue needs to be documented. After documentation, FP will investigate the issue and make the necessary recommendations.
"We identify areas that need attention and have force protection guys come along," Hemphill said. "We escort them to look at it and they will take it from there."
