Machinist Mate 2nd Class Michelle Mayorca is the lead petty officer and lead dock master at Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota Port Operations Department.
“I lead 16 Sailors, 9 local national, and 5 Reservist in the daily operation and maintenance of 14 small boats and $3.6 million in waterfront and oil spill response equipment,” she said.
Mayorca is also responsible for the oversight of daily duties related to Port Operations’ small craft, barges, piers, boat landings, vehicles, and buildings.
Mayorca, from Newark, New Jersey, served aboard the USS John. C. Stennis (CVN 74) prior to arriving to Rota, Spain.
“I love how easy it is to travel around Europe,” she said, referring to her current duty location. “I've also started going back to school to further my education.”
In addition to taking college courses through University of Maryland Global Campus, she is the security manager for port operations, the chapel wine auditor, and repair parts petty officer.
In her free time, Mayorca likes to work out, go hiking, and draw as well as exploring Spain.
“I love how different yet so similar the cultures are to my heritage,” she said. “I'm Puerto Rican and Peruvian and there's some things that are extremely similar.”
When asked if there was anything to share with the Rota community, Mayorca said people may be surprised to hear she attended high school at a performing arts school where she played the trombone.
