FORT CARSON, COLO – As the aircraft hovered the building, the crew chiefs opened the tailgate; tossing out a pair of static ropes one by one. Special Operations Soldiers begin to cascade down and begin raiding the building beneath floor by floor.
10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) hosted 4th Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) for a combined exercise to bring cohesion in communication and sharing information in Fort Carson, Colorado from Aug. 23-26, 2022.
SOAR is the primary rotary-wing support to the Department of Defense Special Operations Forces. SOAR’s mission is to organize, equip, train, resource and employ Army Special Operations aviation forces worldwide in support of contingency missions and combatant commanders.
Both Special Operation units have two goals in mind: build relationship through precision heavy assault helicopter operations and conduct unit mission training with an emphasis on high altitude.
“The relationship between 10th SFG (A) and 4/160th remains strong,” said a 160th SOAR Chief pilot. “This training event allowed new leaders to execute joint plans and refine TTPs (tactics, techniques, and procedures).”
Prior to the field training exercise, 160th SOAR members assisted Green Berets in dry-runs of exiting CH-47 Chinook helicopters. Operators performed repetitions of fast roping and driving tactical vehicles in and out of a CH-47 during the day and night.
“It is to get the repetitions, get our guys trained on how to operate around helicopters, and to get them comfortable talking to them on the coms,” said a team sergeant, “[Furthermore] integrating them with planning in-order to execute the mission.”
Members of SOAR transported Green Berets in a CH-47 to a training site. The Green Berets fast roped down and rapidly deployed to infiltrate buildings within the site to eliminate the “threats.”
This training allowed provided an opportunity for both special operations groups to communicate effectively and build a rapport between the members.
“Communication and trust are crucial to special operations,” said a 160th SOAR pilot, “These bilateral training events provide both organizations the much-needed time to prepare their team for future crisis.”
