37th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Airborne) - Joint Task Force Eagle

Story by: 1st Class Chad T. Etzel

AL BAKIR AIRFIELD, Iraq— Spc. Jaymor J. Paul was recently recognized by his unit as the best engineer Soldier through nomination for the Van Autreve Award for meritorious efforts while deployed to Iraq, Dec 14.

The Engineer Regimental Van Autreve Award, is named in honor of former Sergeant Major of the Army Leon Van Autreve, and presented to Soldiers who display honorable attributes. Paul, a native of Saipan, and member A Company, 37th Engineer Battalion- Joint Task Force, based out of Fort Bragg, N.C., has represented his unit with the highest professionalism and dedication to the Engineer Corps's vision.

Paul has contributed directly to the clearance of over 5,000 km of Iraqi roadways of various hazards that threaten both U.S. and Iraqi forces and civilians. His efforts to work with prototype equipment programs have contributed significantly to the success of his platoon during his deployment to Iraq.

"I want to do my part to help the people of Iraq and my buddies in the platoon," said Paul during the reconnaissance of the severely degraded canal network that irrigates the Salah al Din province of Iraq. His reconnaissance efforts will assist in the rebuilding of this irrigation network to assist the local population of Iraq in the rebuilding of their country and infrastructure.

In addition to working as a sapper, Paul has spent what down time he has after the four to six hour patrols, taking college classes that are offered on Al Bakir Airfield and completing his application for American Citizenship, a goal he hopes to achieve in the near future.

"Paul is an example of a good Soldier. He is well rounded and balances mission objectives and his personal goals. I could not be more proud of his accomplishment and to call him my Soldier," said Capt. Jim Wade, A Company commander.

Paul was chosen to represent his unit due to the fact that his dedication to duty and determination to reach his personal objectives clearly earmarked him above his peers.

The Van Autreve is one of five engineer awards presented annually. Distinguishing selection areas include physical fitness; marksmanship; personal growth in education, morale and welfare activities; and a host of other discerning areas that are looked at in the overall competition.

"It is a privilege to represent the battalion in this competition I hope for the best. I think that it would be awesome to be selected and receive the Van Autreve Award," says Paul, "but I'm really focused right now on getting my mission accomplished and becoming an American Citizen."
