Story by: 1st Lt. Jonathan M. Diaz
AL BAKIR AIRFIELD, Iraq — Sgt. 1st Class Everell Gustave, of Boston, displayed impressive attributes of a Soldier and inducted into the most sacred club amongst the enlisted ranks.
Audie L. Murphy, the most decorated Soldier of World War Two, overcame his poor upbringing and adversity, enlisted in the army as an infantry man and would go on to fight in numerous battles. Murphy rose through the ranks to become one of the greatest leaders the U.S. Army has ever seen. For his actions in combat, Murphy received the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest award for bravery, along with thirty two different decorations, both American and foreign.
For the example that Murphy set, the Army established the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club for Noncommissioned Officers that display integrity, professionalism, commitment to mentoring Soldiers, outstanding leadership abilities and personal ethics.
Gustave, a platoon sergeant in A Company, 37th Engineer Battalion- Joint Task Force Eagle based out of Fort Bragg, N.C., was recently inducted into this elite club, which only two percent of NCOs in the Army have been selected to join.
Capt. Jim Wade, A Co. commander says that Gustave sets a positive example for junior Soldiers.
"Sfc. Gustave is an integral part of the Outlaw team and family. He is a priceless asset to his platoon and to this company."
Gustave first attended a battalion level board and once selected, would have to go on to complete another three boards at higher level commands. Out of the fifteen NCOs that went to the board, which convened for those deployed to Al Bakir Airfield, Iraq, Gustave was one of four selected to become a member of the club.
"I feel honored and consider it a great privilege to be able to join this club. This is a dream come true that I have been chasing for the past seven years," said Gustave when asked how he felt about being accepted.
Having first learned of the club about seven years ago while stationed in Korea, Gustave now knows that he is considered among the best and will continue to lead his troops while conducting route clearance and civil capacity and development missions in Salad Ad Din, Iraq.
