BAGHDAD, Iraq- Soldiers of the 101st Engineer Battalion have been working with members of the 6th Iraqi Army Field Engineer Regiment to establish a functional supply system for the Iraqi army engineers.
Staff Sgt. Frank Lopez, from Webster, Mass., has already conducted seven maintenance and operations courses to members of the 6th IA over the past few months. Lt. Ammar, from the 6th Iraqi Army Field Engineer Regiment, has attended several of these classes.
During one of the first courses together, Lopez taught the Soldiers how parts are ordered in the U.S. military.
"The military has a good supply system, Ammar liked that we can look up part numbers to any part that we might need," said Lopez.
Ammar understood the process but explained to Lopez that the 6th IA FER has no such process.
"We create a list of parts we need and give it to the local markets. Sometimes we get the parts, other times we never hear back," said Ammar. "A lot of our equipment is new and there are no spare parts. If we place an order for three parts, and there are only two, we get none because they only fill complete orders."
Lopez has dedicated a lot of time to teaching Ammar as much as he can about the U.S. military supply system.
"I am happy to help, he's one of the first to take the initiative," said Lopez. "He will be the first to get this organized, and if it works for him, he will be able to teach all the other engineer regiments."
Ammar is currently working on obtaining all of the parts manuals he can that correspond with his unit's equipment. Most of the manuals arrive in English and he has a difficult time reading them.
Ammar is enrolled in English classes to help him with this project and his career.
Lopez suggested that while Ammar takes on this task, he look to his senior non-commissioned officers to help lead the Soldiers of his field engineer regiment.
"I have full support from my commander, whatever I do is in the best interest of the regiment," said Ammar.
With the help of the Soldiers of the 101st Eng. Bn. and the initiative of Ammar, the 6th IA FER is on their way to becoming an example for the rest of the Iraqi army.
