This month, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage with two generations of Mountain Rangers.
Jose Gonzalez commissioned from the Mountain Ranger Battalion 25 years ago, and today, his son hopes to follow in his footsteps.
Gonzalez enlisted in the Army as an Infantry Soldier in 1986, just like his own father, a retired sergeant major whose parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico. Gonzalez’ mother was a first generation American from Durango, Mexico.
After serving in the Infantry, Gonzalez transitioned to Military Intelligence and became a German linguist. He says he felt compelled to help with the conflict in Germany, where the Berlin Wall still divided the city. Eventually, he chose to commission, and he completed his Bachelor’s degree in communication from UCCS with a minor in German. In 1997, he joined the ranks of Army Officers.
After five combat tours, more than 132 combat convoys, and 11 years as a counterintelligence agent, Gonzalez retired from the Army in October 2012.
When his son, J, decided to join the Army after high school, Gonzalez knew UCCS’ Mountain Ranger Battalion was the best places for him to receive the preparation he needed for a career as an Army Officer.
“I know what the Mountain Ranger Battalion can do for him,” said Gonzalez, “because I know what it did for me.”
J is also majoring in communications with an emphasis in leadership, and he hopes to serve a full career as a Military Intelligence Officer in the Army.
Gonzalez’ wife, Elaine, is proud of both her husband and her stepson. “My husband is very successful,” she explained, “so I think J will be successful just like his father. His father has been a great mentor.”
