Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) took part in the San Diego Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association’s 34th Annual Department of the Navy (DON) Gold Coast Small Business Procurement Event Sept. 7.

“Our small business partners play a vital role in helping us maintain our supply chains which are essential to helping the fleet maximize endurance at sea,” said Chris Espenshade, Director, NAVSUP Office of Small Business Programs.

Rear. Adm. Peter Stamatopoulos, Commander, NAVSUP and 49th Chief of Supply Corps, was among four guests on the event’s Department of the Navy Supply Chain Readiness Roundtable: Where Small Business Can Help Support. Other panelists included DON Office of Small Business Programs Director Jimmy Smith; Senior Director Global Procurement, BAE Systems, Clark Dumont; and Raytheon Missiles & Defense Special Projects Director, Terry Downing.

The panel provided perspective on how the DON and industry partners are actively assessing and addressing the risks associated with DON’s unique supply chains and how the small businesses community can best support the Navy’s mission.

This year’s theme was ‘Thriving as a Department of the Navy Small Business in a World of Global Challenges.’ More than 200 government agencies and industry organizations participated to provide panels, workshops and matchmaking sessions.

The three-day event was an opportunity for small businesses to connect with leaders of the industry to establish an open and honest line of communication.

“These engagements are extremely beneficial for both industry and NAVSUP. The dialogue shared at these events is a two-way street, industry is better prepared to support upcoming mission requirements and we gain a better awareness of the unique small business capability available in the marketplace. We always view industry as more than just a contract holder,” explained Espenshade. “They’re a mission partner, so it’s a great opportunity to listen, learn and continuously improve on our acquisition processes.”
