HERLONG, Calif. -- The U.S. Army has recognized Sierra Army Depot with its highest award for a maintenance depot.

Sierra Army Depot won the U.S. Army Award for Maintenance Excellence for the depot’s achievements toward materiel and installation readiness, during Fiscal Year 2021, the U.S. Army announced in late July. Sierra Army Depot won for the “depot” category. Tobyhanna Army Depot finished as the runner-up.

"The Army Award for Maintenance Excellence is a symbol of the quality work produced by the Sierra Army Depot workforce every day,” Lt. Col. Amy Cory, Sierra Army Depot commander, said. “Not just for maintenance activities, but across the whole of the installation. This recognition equally validates the important role Sierra Army Depot fills for increasing Army readiness. Sierra Army Depot is honored to be recognized by the U.S. Army for its dedication and commitment to excellence."

Sierra Army Depot last won the award in 2018.

Sierra Army Depot sent millions of pieces of COVID-19 personal protective equipment to installations across the United States in support of Operation Allies Welcome, during Fiscal Year 2021. The depot saved the U.S. Army $137 million with its parts harvest program, provided support to civil authorities during the Beckwourth Complex fires throughout northern California, and was recognized as an OSHA VPP Star worksite.

The parts harvest program completed a major project consisting of 150 M113A3 armored personnel carriers on schedule – including 39 secondary items and 2,777 individual items. The program also removed a total of 464 engines – outpacing Army supply demands.

The Sierra Army Depot fire department protecting numerous crucial assets to the surrounding community during the Beckwourth Complex fires as well as saving numerous structure and providing relief to firefighters to civil departments. For its efforts, the department was named Fire Department of the Year by U.S. Army Materiel Command, and Michael Graves, Sierra Army Depot firefighter, was named the U.S. Army firefighter of the Year.

The Army Award for Maintenance Excellence was established in 1982 by the Department of the Army to recognize exceptional accomplishment in maintenance and provide added incentive to the competitive programs of Major Army Commands. Active TOE, Army National Guard TOE, Army Reserve TOE, DOL's, and TDA units compete separately, and the competition in each component is divided into three categories: Small, Medium and Large, based on number of authorized personnel. Sierra Army Depot is now in consideration for the Department of Defense-level award.
