CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – The Army Community Services, hosted the 4th annual Baby Shower, Sept. 15 at the Morning Calm Center on Camp Humphreys.
The baby shower was organized to celebrate parenthood and to teach the new and expectant parents about the resources offered to them both on and off-post.
“There are families that may be new to Korea and don’t know what’s available to them,” said Olivia Bourke, Family Advocacy Program specialist. “We wanted today to be like a one-stop shop for folks to
know what’s available to them and to support a strong resilient family."
On the second floor of the Morning Calm Center ACS volunteers and representatives greeted the participants to their “Hungry Caterpillar” themed baby shower. Photos booths decorated with green
arched balloons where set-up along the entry for new parents and parents-to-be, to take pictures with their families and colleagues. A nursing mothers’ area was set in the corner and at the registration table
smiling faces handed out BINGO cards.
Bourke said games were a “must” at a baby shower, so they wanted to mirror this sentiment. Each BINGO card spelled hungry on the back with vegetables under each letter. The vegetables represented
on-post and off-post resources which the hungry caterpillar would snack on as the card was stamped.
To receive the stamps attendees would have to go around to the booths and get information on the resources offered to them and their families. Seventeen resources providers came out to support the event and the parents-to-be, to include Exceptional Family Member Program, Women Infants and Children, Parent Central Services, New Parent Support-Osan, and New Parent Support Program.
A fully stamped card would ensure the participant would receive a diaper bag full of baby products and a completed exit survey of the event would guarantee they would walk away with a tea set.
Sergeant Chynna Hopgood, multichannel transmission systems operator-maintainer assigned to 1st Signal Brigade, said it is nice to see there are events like the baby shower that will bring in resources to show support to the pregnant spouses and service members of the community.
Bourke said be on the lookout because there are plans of another baby shower in the spring.
