CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea (Aug. 2, 2022) – Soldiers of the 121st Field Hospital recently improved their skills as medical providers by training with the medical equipment they could use in a field-based contingency setting.

The Soldiers, all working in the Brian D. Allgood Army Community Hospital, brought equipment typically reserved for use outside of hospitals indoors as part of scheduled hands-on training designed to increase individual Soldier skills in a temporary operating room or care facility.

“We need to be able to employ our field equipment in any setting because we are Soldiers first,” said Spc. Ashley Hernandez, 121st Field Hospital, 549th Hospital Center. “If we are called to fight, that won’t be the time to learn.”

Soldiers completed the training while maintaining the requirements of running Brian D. Allgood Community Hospital’s surgical unit, woman and infant care unit, and radiology section. Running the hospital is just one of two missions assigned to the Soldiers: armistice healthcare and wartime readiness.

So important was the training that Eighth Army’s deputy commanding general for sustainment, Brig. Gen. Joseph D’costa visited to observe a portion of it.

“Medical and sustainment are the same,” D’costa explained to Soldiers participating in the training. “Each supports our people on the front lines. If we take care of our people, everything else will go well. The enlisted are the backbone of the Medical Corps; when the bullets fly, it will be you that provide that first level of care to our Soldiers.”

The 121st Field Hospital expects to complete similar training with other Soldiers in the coming weeks as part of an effort to develop junior leaders in clinical and field settings.
