The ceremony was held to honor those soldiers recently promoted to the ranks of sergeant. The ceremony is meant to mark the newly promoted sergeants’ departure from the junior ranks, symbolizing that they are no longer just followers, but leaders.

“It’s your time to be a leader,” said Command Sgt. Maj. James Taylor, 63rd Troop Command CSM. “It’s time for you to step up and set the example”.

The ceremony was held on 9-11 and began with a moment of silence and video of remembrance. This was followed by the Table of Remembrance ceremony and video in recognition of the fallen soldiers of the Michigan National Guard.

When it was time for the official induction ceremony, each inductee’s name was called, and they were invited by Command Sgt. Maj. Taylor to “cross the time-honored line and join the corps.” Each soldier passed under the NCO arch and were presented a framed copy of the NCO Creed and the NCO Charge – all as a symbolic gesture of officially entering the NCO corps.

Taylor believes this ceremony should become more of a regular practice in the Michigan National Guard. Necessary props have been gathered and built for the ceremony by the non-profit Zero Day, which are now available for any unit to borrow and use to hold their own ceremony.

“It’s an important and emotional event,” says Taylor. “This is a time-honored tradition, as well as a way to help soldiers realize the importance of their new positions and responsibilities.”

Command Sgt. Maj. John T. Raines, Command Sgt. Major of the Army National Guard, spoke to the inductees by video. “I want you to remember this day”, he said. “It should be one of the most important in your life. It does not matter what your job is, the Army is asking you to be responsible for more than yourself, we are asking you to be responsible for people, the Army’s number one priority.”

The ceremony ended with the Army song as loud claps and cheers congratulated the newly inducted NCOs.
