KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- The 8th Fighter Wing conducted a large-scale training event on Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea, September 11 through 16, 2022. All base personnel participated.
This specific training scenario focused on testing the Wolf Pack’s ability to defend the base, prepare for follow-on forces, and fight tonight.
Several simulated threats were thrown at each unit by the wing inspection team, who designed and graded response to the training injects.
In addition to their regular contingency duties, approximately 2800 Airmen across the base practiced fortifying work centers, donning mission oriented protective posture gear to protect against toxic environments, conducting post-attack reconnaissance sweeps, and augmenting security forces. Soldiers assigned to the 2-1 Alpha “Patriot” Battery at Kunsan AB also practiced their main mission of air defense. Every unit worked around the clock to provide constant attention and support to all scenario injects.
The nerve center for all this activity was the emergency operations center (EOC), headed by the civil engineer squadron (CES) commander.
“Civil engineering plays an enormous role in contingency operations,” said Lt. Col. John “Devil” Marshall, 8th CES commander and EOC director. “Base recovery is a core competency of all civil engineer squadrons, including recovery after attack. This includes hardening the installation, leading CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear) response and assessment, and repairing any damage to the airfield or infrastructure after an attack. The role of the EOC director is to prioritize resources to protect the Wolf Pack mission, and communicate information from wing leadership to the Airmen doing their part in defending the base.”
The 8th FW falls under Pacific Air Forces Command, charged with providing continuous, unrivaled air, space, and cyberspace capabilities to ensure regional stability and security. All units in the region are expected to be ready to provide lethal airpower in a moments notice; training events ensure Airmen and equipment remain capable.
By the end of the six-day training event, the Wolf Pack was able to successfully fend off dozens of simulated threats, set the stage for reinforcements and launched X aircraft that eliminated simulated targets across the Korean peninsula.
“The Wolf Pack constantly trains and runs scenarios so that we never have to get ready; we stay ready,” said Chief Master Sgt. Carlos F. “Wolf Chief” Damian, 8th FW command chief. “Anyone that sees how much airpower we can generate and how efficiently our Airmen can perform their missions receives a clear message: we are ready to support our Republic of Korea partners and primed to deliver precision combat airpower anytime, anywhere.”
