The 2d Theater Signal Brigade #Spotlight shines on Staff Sgt. Nico J. Reid, a Career Counselor assigned to the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion-Enhanced.

As a Career Counselor, Staff Sgt. Reid’s duties include providing guidance to determine qualifications and eligibility for reenlistment, extensions, and all MOS reclassifications. He also establishes reenlistment objectives in accordance with Department of the Army guidance, policies and Army goals.

He directly advises the battalion commander, command sergeant major and company command teams on The Total Army Retention program, and provides training to company level retention NCOs.

Reid became a Career Counselor to help Soldiers get what they want out of their career.

“Career Counselors play more roles than I think anyone knows, and being the only SME on your craft in a Battalion can be stressful at times. The job is very fulfilling when everything lines up and we are able to get Soldiers exactly what they want, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. This job is not easy. It seems every day there’s a new challenge or situation that Soldiers have gotten themselves into, but helping them out, and making it happen for them is the reward.”

Reid says being a Career Counselor has taught him how to be a better listener, which helps him provide Soldiers with better career counseling.

“I’ve learned to not give advice based on my life because all Soldiers have their own beliefs, upbringings, and desires. I’ve learned to listen and relate to the Soldier, and give advice based on the Soldier's individual situation. I just try to get Soldiers to weigh out the positives and negatives, alongside their needs, wants and desires to make the most informed and smart decision for their lives.”

Reid says two things inspire him to keep striving to overcome any challenge in life.

“The two things that really inspire me to get things done is my family of course and just being a reliable leader and being able to uphold that reputation with my Soldiers, Peers and Seniors.”

“I’m most thankful for the family I’ve created. I wasn’t raised with much of a family value, so I don’t keep in touch with a lot of family, but my wife has taught me the beauty in having a dependable family who loves and supports you through anything. I am truly blessed and thankful for her and all of my boys.”
