The F-35 Site Activation Task Force (SATAF) returned for its fourth semi-annual meeting, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, Sept. 21-22, 2022.
Military construction is on track and the F-35 Operational Training Center, which includes six full mission simulators, is expected to be complete this October. The training facility will be the first of the F-35 transformation projects realized on the installation.
According to Paul Shrem, facilities department head, the purpose built dual-module hangar that will house Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 542 and VMFA-251 is 85% complete and scheduled to be finished by the end of 2022.
The first F-35 Lightning II squadron to be activated on MCAS Cherry Point will be VMFA-542 and is expected to be operational by June 2023.
The two-day SATAF conference allowed key stakeholders from the air station, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Lockheed Martin, Pratt and Whitney, Headquarters Marine Corps, and the Joint Program Office to assemble and identify site-specific activation requirements in order to permanently base six fifth generation fighter squadrons.
