(ATLANTA-- Sept. 23, 2022) America’s Navy and Navy Recruiting Command hosted Navy Promotional Days (NPD) Atlanta, Sept. 19 – Sept. 23, as part of the Navy’s national search for the best and brightest students who have what it takes to excel in high-demand, cutting-edge fields.
Throughout the weeklong visit, NPD team, composed of NRC Sailors, including junior officers hand-selected from the fleet, known as Junior Officer Diversity Outreach (JODO) and Sailors assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group visited Lithonia High School, North Atlanta High School, Sprayberry High School and Morehouse College.
“I am super grateful for this opportunity,” said Lt. Marissa Ghant, Junior Officer Diversity Outreach. “Mentorship has always been important to me and being able to talk about the scholarship opportunities in my career field with high school and college students is super fulfilling.”
During the visits to the schools, officers and enlisted Sailors spoke on a variety of topics in classroom presentations including education and scholarships benefits offered by the Navy. The NPDs also featured an immersive virtual reality experience, housed in a massive 18-wheeler truck, named the Nimitz, which allowed more than 500 participants to experience a virtual reality Navy SEAL mission of piloting a high-speed special warfare combatant craft (SWCC), as well as speak with the Navy representatives, ask questions, and share their aspirations for the future.
“I think this is important for students for a number of reasons,” said North Atlanta High School Principal Curtis Douglass. “The primary reason is it gives students options. There are many military branches, but the Navy is a great one. It also gives information about the Navy and the careers in the Navy. Students get a lot out of that. It provides them with information they may not be privy to, such as ways to pay for college before going into the Navy. At its least, it opens students’ eyes to careers they may be interested in regardless of if they enlist in the Navy or not.”
With more than 330,000 active duty sailors, 290 deployable ships, more than 3,700 aircraft and dozens of bases in the U.S. and across the globe, America's Navy is the largest, most powerful naval force in the world. The opportunities available in today's Navy are as boundless as the sea itself.
NTAG Atlanta’s area of responsibility includes more than 35 Navy Recruiting Stations and Navy Officer Recruiting Stations spread throughout 82,000 square miles of Georgia, Alabama and parts of Florida.
Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 26 NTAGs and 64 Talent Acquisition Onboarding Centers that serve more than 1,000 recruiting stations around the world. Their mission is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
