FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Calling all aspiring firefighters! The Fort Bragg Directorate of Emergency Services Fire team will be celebrating Fire Prevention Week at various locations across the installation the week of October 10.
Fire prevention week will include demonstrations, the fire safety house, information on kitchen safety, information on smoke detector safety, and fire trucks will rotate throughout the day depending on mission requirements. There may even be a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog.
The events will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the North Post PX, Oct. 12 at the South Post PX and Oct. 13 at Womack Army Medical Center, and at 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 14 at the Soldier Support Center.
“This is such a fun week for our team, and is a great opportunity to educate our community,” said Richard McGuire, DES deputy fire chief. “It’s so important that a Family has a good fire prevention and escape plan. A Family knowing what to do helps our team accomplish their mission when the time comes.”
The Fort Bragg DES Fire team is the busiest department in the Army. Last fiscal year the team was dispatched to 7,495 incidents, provided fire protection for three Army airfields and four remote landing zones for a total of 92,359 aircraft movements, and responded to 385 mutual aid calls.
“Our team really has a large impact on not only operations here, but also on the outside community,” explained McGuire.
The DES Fire team recently won the Department of the Army Large Fire Department of the Year for fiscal year 2021, where they competed against 73 other fire departments. The department has won the award over twelve times since 2003.
Along with these awards the department earned International Accreditation status beginning in 2013 and has maintained it through best practices. The department has continued to lead the DA in innovation and leading-edge services, such as the dive team and the technical rescue team, to the community.
“The real asset of our team is the firefighters who make this happen year after year,” said McGuire. “These are stellar folks riding in the fire trucks everyday providing these services to our community. I hope everyone can take some time to meet some of our amazing team members during the upcoming fire prevention week.”
