HONOLULU – Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific (MIDPAC) held an award ceremony for Lt. Santiago A. Vascones Del Risco from the Peruvian Navy, September 22.
Vascones Del Risco served as the personnel exchange program officer and the future operations planner for Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 40 from June 2018 to July 2020. His coordination of naval ships, submarines, and aircraft resulted in the success of the largest international exercise involving 15 navies around the world.
“It is a high honor to receive the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal in front of great leaders and great friends,” Vascones Del Risco said. “I want to share the words of my grandfather, who has always told me to do my best for our great Navy. I try to live up to those words and I hope that my family can be proud of me.”
The award was presented by MIDPAC’s Commander, Capt. Joseph Ring. The ceremony was attended by the Captain of BAP Guise (CC 28), Cmdr. Paolo Camogliano. Sailors from both Guise and MIDPAC celebrated the presentation side-by-side, which displays the boundless support that both nations offer to each other.
"These last two months have been such an adventure, a great challenge with many lessons learned,” said Camogliano. “Working with MIDPAC as a team to get Guise back underway has been a fulfilling experience. We highly appreciate all the support we have received from them, the opportunity to share our experiences, and most importantly for me, their hospitality and the friendship we have developed, something that will last forever. In Pearl Harbor, we feel like we are home.”
The mission of Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific (MIDPAC) is to manage the overall warfighting capability of the Surface Combatant Force homeported at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH), Hawaii; to coordinate through the Fleet Response Plan (FRP) cycle the manning, operations, combat systems, engineering, maintenance, training, logistics, administration, and support of assigned units to achieve the highest levels of combat readiness.
