FORT BRAGG, N.C-- Celebrating years of helping Soldiers learn, the John Throckmorton Library held its 25th anniversary celebration Sept. 28, here.

The celebration featured a library-themed storytime for children and parents with events, games, music, and special guests such as the Fort Bragg Garrison Commander Col. John Wilcox.

"Libraries existed on Bragg for over 50 years prior to this building being constructed,” said Geniece Baer, Supervisory Librarian at Throckmorton Library. “The prior facilities were spread all over the place before they made the decision to bring everything together under one roof and created this building. The building was built and dedicated to Gen. John L. Throckmorton25 years ago."

Throckmorton was commissioned as an infantry officer from the National War College in 1954. Over the course of his career, he was assigned to the operations section in the First Army, served as a tactical officer at West Point, and was the commander of the 5th Regimental Combat Team during the Korean War.

Throckmorton would eventually command the 82nd Airborne Division and years later serve as the commanding general of the XVIII Airborne Corps in 1967. He retired in Fayetteville, N.C, after 35 years of honorable military service to his country.

Over the years the library has continued to serve the active-duty service members, veterans, Department of Defense civilians, retirees and Family members through its resources and programs.

"The Throckmorton library has 75 computers with Common Access Card capabilities: said Baer. “Many come to the library to do training, print out forms, or medpros. (Medical Protection System)."

The library provides over $378,000 worth of books to service members and their Families every month.

"We have a military section dedicated to materials that help Soldiers further their professional goals, " said Baer. "We have study- prep guides and have a lot of online resources."

The library leads the Army's summer reading program initiative, and recently hit a goal of 1.6 million reading minutes.

In addition to the events and programs, the library also offers opportunities for leaders to engage with the community.

"We have a program here called Leaders as Readers, where we invite upper enlisted and officers to come and read during one of our storytimes,” said Baer. “They have the opportunity to do read in person or for one of our virtual storytimes. These connections help to create a cultural reading climate within the garrison."

"The library has always been a family-oriented building,” said Lenona Oglesby, a senior librarian at the Throckmorton who has been working there since the beginning. “We're all about the Soldiers and their Families. It's about learning, and we're here to learn."
