The 3rd Infantry Division inducted five noncommissioned officers into the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club during an induction ceremony held at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Sep. 28, 2022. Members of the prestigious club exemplify leadership characterized by personal concern for the needs, training, development and welfare of Soldiers and concern for their Families.
The SAMC was first introduced on Fort Hood, Texas, in 1986 and expanded Army-wide in 1998. It was designed to recognize NCOs whose leadership achievements and performance merit special recognition.
“The Audie Murphy Club is a club of highly motivated and dedicated noncommissioned officers that go through a process to be inducted into the club,” says Sgt. 1st Class Aaron Gellos, a senior SAMC member and 3rd ID band member. “It's great to see people becoming interested in the club and is only for people that want to give back and want to give their time.”
The club is named after Sgt. Audie Murphy, the most decorated Soldier of World War II and a 3rd ID Soldier. Murphy earned 33 different medals, including the Medal of Honor, during his military career.
All Active Duty, National Guard, and reserves NCOs from corporal to sergeant first class are eligible for selection in the SAMC. Soldiers must qualify as an expert with their assigned weapon, pass an Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) with a minimum score of 90 points in each event, and must pass a board process where they are evaluated by current SAMC members. Starting October 1st, 2022 Soldiers must qualify on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) to be eligible. Selection into the SAMC happens in four phases: commander’s nomination, performance test, initial selection board, and the final selection board.
“If an NCO is motivated enough and has a good work ethic, has good character, and gets recommended by their leadership, that they would be a great asset to the SAMC club,” said Gellos. “Giving time back to the community and our fellow Soldiers is an honor.”
Induction into SAMC is a means of recognizing NCOs who have contributed significantly to the development of a professional NCO Corps and a combat-ready Army. To formally induct awardees, they received the SAMC medallion that identifies them as a member of the prestigious organization.
“This is something I’ve known about since being in the military; it was nice to accomplish this goal,” said Staff Sgt. Ethan Calhoun, a new member of SAMC, assigned to 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. “It challenges you as a leader, and you have to balance time for your family and be able to take care of your Soldiers.”
Calhoun said this was a great experience personally and professionally, and it will keep pushing him to take on future endeavors.
