CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea – Humphreys Middle School art teachers and students painted and illustrated pictures for their “Wall of Hope” in support of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
Manny Brown, the school’s adolescent support and counseling service representative said when Bisirat Suim, the garrison’s Army Substance Abuse Program coordinator, called on him to participate in the “Wall of Hope” project he was elated and enlisted two of the school’s art teachers, Margaret Zudock-Gilliam and Darlene Rozzi to answer the call.
Brown said Rozzi and Zudock had their students create the “Wall of Hope” out of pictures they crafted during class. The pictures were created by the middle schoolers to show their friends support is out there if they need someone, all they must do is ask or dial the 988-crisis lifeline. The photos were organized to spell “hope.”
Before the children began their project, Brown and the school’s Military Family Life Counselor were brought into the classroom to give a suicide prevention class.
Dr. Helen Bailey, Department of Defense, Pacific West District Superintendent and Brown both expressed the importance of students working with the MFLCs on this project and for them to know the counselors are there to support them if they need it.
“It’s been a great experience to hear the kids – even with their short lifetime – be so open about their experiences with suicide and to listen to them ask questions about the crisis hotline, 988,” said Bailey. “It was exciting, especially to see how creative they were in putting the wall together.”
If you or some you know needs help, call the crisis hotline. The number is 988 and is available 24/7.
