As Fire Prevention Week approaches, we renew our efforts and reflect on the importance of fire safety. Air Force Fire and Emergency Services is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, 9-15 October 2022.

This year's theme "Fire Won't Wait, Plan Your Escape” works to educate everyone about the simple but important actions you can take to stay safe from fire in your home and in your work center. Homes today burn faster than ever; you may have as little as two minutes to safely escape a home fire after the smoke alarm sounds.

Fire Prevention is the cornerstone of the Air Force’s Fire and Emergency Services Program and has proven extremely effective. Because of the Air Force’s commitment to fire safety, the hard work of fire departments throughout our installations, and the design efforts incorporated into our facilities, we provide some of the safest work and home environments. However, despite those efforts, fire safety still needs you to make it count when fire strikes!

During the week of 9-15 October, Air Force fire departments will be out and about in your offices, exchanges, commissaries, schools, youth centers and even on street corners reminding and educating our Air Force family about what simple steps you can take to make that final difference and safely escape from fire.

We strongly encourage you to embrace the 2022 Fire Prevention Week campaign. It's important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Advanced preparation is key to knowing what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Fire escape plans will vary with every floor plan. Have a plan for everyone to escape! Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance waking up or getting out. In support of this year's efforts, consider the following tips:

    - Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

    - Home smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside sleeping areas, and on every level. They should also be interconnected where possible so when one sounds, they all sound.

    - Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.

    - Have an outside meeting place a safe distance away where everyone knows to meet after escaping.

    - Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household.

Your installation fire department will be hosting a series of events in support of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape." Take the time to engage with them to refamiliarize yourself with the simple steps to stay safe from fire.
