JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C.— The joyful cheers and cries reverberated throughout the crisp fall air, drowning out the humming engines of C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Family, friends, and coworkers on the flightline cheered and embraced the 47 Airmen, who were greatly missed by their loved ones.
Airmen from the 816th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron arrived back at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, Oct. 3, 2022, after three- to six-month deployments to Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar.
The Airmen served as the last rotating members of the squadron, as the 816th EAS inactivated on Sept. 30.
After 16 continuous years of active service, the squadron is being replaced by the 8th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, which will provide similar capabilities.
The Airmen’s effort and hard work were felt around the installation, and by Joint Base Charleston personnel, who also recognized them.
“I’m proud of the hard work our Airmen put into their mission overseas, and I’m happy to have them back,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Robert Lankford, 437th Airlift Wing commander. “They accomplished some incredible things downrange and I know they’ll continue to do an outstanding job of carrying out the mobility mission from Joint Base Charleston.”
