Naval District Washington Commandant Rear Admiral Nancy Lacore joined Naval Support Activity Bethesda commanding officer Captain Scott Switzer and several other tenant leaders on Tuesday, Oct. 4 for a ribbon-cutting to recognize the completion of major rehabilitation work in Unaccompanied Housing Building 60, Comfort Hall.
Capt. Switzer said the project addressed more than 200 locations throughout the building and gave specific thanks to NAVFAC and the installation housing team for keeping track of it all through the six-month effort.
“NSA Bethesda is committed to maintaining a healthy and safe environment with exceptional quality of life programs for service members,” said Switzer. “The teamwork and dedication over the last six months measurably demonstrate our commitment to achieving that.”
During the ceremony, Rear Adm. Lacore noted how well the installation and Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) teams were able to work together to plan and execute the project.
“You, your public works team, and housing have ably demonstrated how sharp eyes and strong leadership can turn a situation that feels unwinnable into a success,” said Lacore. “I know that you will bring that same energy to continuing to meet the needs of our service members across the installation going forward.”
In March, after moving all Bldg. 60 residents out to finish work on a hot water improvement project, an additional project was approved and funded to improve other quality-of-life aspects of the building. The project included replacing the floors in all rooms, upgrading electrical infrastructure, bathroom repairs, and painting.
Moving forward, Switzer said it’s important to emphasize the continued need for rapid responses to easily solvable problems by ensuring that tenant leaders encourage their service members living in unaccompanied housing keep reporting issues as they arise.
“As our partners in this effort, we need our tenant leaders to help us keep the communication lines open,” Switzer said. “If residents feel they aren't being heard, please reach out to us and help us bridge any gaps. To ensure a unified effort, our housing team will also emphasize this message.”
New residents are expected to begin moving into the building by the end of the month.
