REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- Storms – whether the external ones associated with rain and wind or the internal ones that wreak havoc on feelings and emotions – can lead to destruction and change the course of life.
But with the right skills and tools, the damage caused by a storm can be turned into opportunities, and lead to a better life built on resilience, strength and determination. During a 15-week series, Master Resilience Trainers from across the Army Materiel Command enterprise will review different aspects of resiliency, hoping to help participants become better equipped to use life skills, and build mental and emotional fitness.
The series, called How to Thrive During Life’s Challenges: Boost Your Mental Fitness by Building Your Resilience Toolkit, will begin Thursday, Oct. 13, at 10 a.m. with an opening panel discussion on the six competencies that make up resilience. The trainers will also share their favorite “go-to” life skills they used to help tackle adversities. The resilience training will teach participants how to evaluate, confront and overcome hardship.
“Resilient people tap into their inner strengths and this training gives them the tools to be successful,” said AMC Master Resilience Trainer Valerie Francis, who co-planned the 15-session program.
“Those lacking resilience may turn to unhealthy coping behaviors – such as alcohol or drug abuse – which can negatively impact performance and relationships. To me, this series brings to mind a quote by Little Women author Louisa May Alcott – ‘I am no longer afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.’ This class gives you the riggings to sail the ship.”
In the first session, Francis and master resilience trainers Tim Rolfe, Installation Management Command; Keven Hutchinson, Security Assistance Command; Nick Osterhaus, Army Sustainment Command; Patricia Hill, Army Contracting Command; and Lori Owens, Army Sustainment Command will review the six competencies for resilience – self-awareness, self-regulation, optimism, mental agility, strength of character and connection. Together, these competencies build a robust toolkit to help tackle life’s challenges, Francis said.
“We'll always have challenges in life, big and small, but how we deal with them defines who we are as a person,” she said. “Plus, those participating in our series will have the opportunity to pay it forward by mentoring and setting the example to others on how to not only tackle life's challenges but grow and flourish in the midst of them.”
The sessions meet the criteria for military personnel to receive credit for mandatory resilience training classes, plus Army Civilians can receive continuous learning points. While resilience helps improve life situations, it also helps employees be more productive, focused and successful in the workplace.
“Resilient individuals can be happier, more confident and productive and have a mind-set they can tackle any problem head-on. These are the types of individuals who employers like to have on their team,” Francis said.
