SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany – Nearly nine months after the start of the crisis in Ukraine, and the sound of fighter jets continues to fill the skies of a once “Sleepy Spang.” As Saber Nation aircraft maintainers and pilots strengthen NATO’s collective defense through a visual show of force of fighter jets and 5th generation weapons, Air Force Civil Air Patrol cadets are developing partnerships from the ground up – quite literally.

The long-standing U.S.-German partnership afforded critical aviation training and the first overseas glider flight for the Spangdahlem Civil Air Patrol Overseas Cadet Squadron 126.

“This past weekend, we partnered with the Utscheid Glider Club to give the cadets an opportunity to learn about this unique aspect of aviation,” said Capt. James Lloyd, CAP squadron commander. “At Spangdahlem, our program focuses on leadership, aerospace education, character development and physical fitness – all in an effort to make future leaders who can be of service to their community.”

On the day of the launch, German airfield operators and CAP cadre guided 13 cadets through glider preparations, and cockpit and flight safety as well as glider launches and winch vehicle control functions. The team walked each of the gliders out into the Utscheid airfield, hooked it to the winch vehicle and took turns in the back seat of the launched aircraft.

“The gliders are launched by a 400-horsepower motor that speeds it up to 60 miles per hour and 1,000 feet high in just a few seconds,” said Lloyd. “This was a great way to get youth interested and excited about aviation, and we hope to have many more great days out at this airfield in the future!”
