Building on its partnership with Slovenia to ensure bilateral security, the U.S. Army will receive equipment through the Slovenian port of Koper in early October, 2022. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command and 839th Transportation Battalion, 598th Transportation Brigade (Surface Deployment and Distribution Command), will receive and offload approximately 850 pieces of equipment assigned to the 101st Division Sustainment Brigade.
From Koper, 21st TSC will transport the equipment via rail and commercial line-haul to additional sites in Europe. The 101st DSB, out of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, is temporarily deploying in support of U.S. European and NATO allies and in response to the crisis in Ukraine.
The October port operation will be the first deployment of this size and scale that the U.S. Army has conducted in Koper.
“This movement is an opportunity for the U.S., Slovenia, and NATO to refine processes, and procedures to enhance military mobility as a whole,” said 21st TSC Commander Maj. Gen. James Smith, who met with Slovenian Armed Forces Commander Maj. Gen. Roman Urbanč and senior level logisticians in Ljubljana in September.
“21st TSC values the great partnership with the Slovenia Armed Forces,” said Smith. “We will continue to pursue opportunities to use the port of Koper to fulfill E.U. PESCO [Permanent Structured Cooperation] and NATO objectives for military mobility in the region and across the continent. I look forward to strengthening our relationship in the near future.”
21st Theater Sustainment Command executes mission command of operational sustainment across European theater; conducts Reception, Staging, Onward Movement and Integration; sets the Atlantic Resolve joint operation area; executes theater opening, theater distribution, and theater sustainment in support of U.S. European Command and NATO operations; and, as directed executes joint security and support to U.S. Africa Command operations.
