FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 9, 2022) – Military and civilian personnel at Naval Air Station (NAS) Joint Reserve Base (JRB) Fort Worth gathered at the installation’s headquarters building Sept. 9 to hold a flag retirement and remembrance ceremony for all the lives lost during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

This annual ceremony marks the 21st anniversary of that tragic day. The ceremony began with raising the headquarters’ flag to half-staff followed by an invocation and detailed accounting of the events of 9/11.

Commanding Officer for Fleet Readiness Center Reserve Midwest (FRCRM), Capt. Dwayne Porter, guest speaker, commented on the number of lives lost that day. “When you think about these numbers (2,996) it is horrific. What is worse than that is the number of lives that were affected,” said Porter.

“How many of those people had a child born that year? Where are those children that lost a parent—who helped them navigate through life? How many parents lost their sons and daughters? How many brothers and sisters lost their siblings? These tragic losses can never be regained,” said Porter. “The best we can do, is to do our level best to ensure this type of tragedy never happens again.”

The 9/11 terrorist attacks are the worst in United States’ history, said Porter. “The terrorist goals were to instill fear into our conscience. Therefore in the aftermath of the attacks, it was vitally important to get the county back to functioning again.”

“This was a difficult task,” said Porter. “But these terrorists did not understand the American spirit—they underestimated our resolve. The people of this nation will not run and hide when attacked; they will fight to the bitter end.”

“It is difficult to reflect on the terrible events of that day, but it is important to remember what happened so we don’t let it happen again,” said Porter. “This is the reason we serve, to ensure that terrorism does not succeed in taking away our liberty.”

After Porter’s comments, four flags were retired, remembering each hijacked aircraft, and an additional flag for the 2,996 American killed because of these terrorist acts.
