Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a $110.7 million firm-fixed-price task order, Sept. 22, to RQ Construction, LLC, from Carlsbad, California, under a multiple award construction contract for repairs to three separate buildings associated with the TRIDENT Refit Facility (TRF) at Naval Submarine Base (NSB) Kings Bay, Georgia.
The damage was caused by a tornado spawned from Tropical Storm Elsa that touched down in July 2021. The National Weather Service reported sustained winds reaching nearly 130 mph.
“While the storm resulted in damage to several buildings, it did not impact our primary mission of maintaining and modernizing our nation’s war ships,” said Capt. Mark Yates, Commanding Officer, TRIDENT Refit Facility, Kings Bay. “The NAVFAC Southeast project is very welcome news and will allow us to bring all our impacted facilities back to full capability.”
The work provides restoration repairs, which include, but are not limited to, replacement of the brick veneer and metal panel exterior enclosure system, including cold formed steel substructure, portions of the membrane roofing system including insulation, replacement and refinishing of the interior construction and finishes.
The contract will also provide for refurbishment of the hydraulic elevator, refurbishment of the overhead crane systems, replacement of the plumbing fixtures, replacement of the HVAC system, replacement of the fire protection and detection system, replacement of the electrical system, replacement of select specialty equipment, and replacement of furnishings.
The TRF’s mission is to provide unparalleled maintenance and logistics support to the Nation’s elite submarine force.
Work will be performed in St. Marys, Georgia and is expected to be completed by Sept. 2025.
