Lt. Gen. Mark Weatherington, U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command deputy commander, visited Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, Sept. 23-24, to meet with 7th Bomb Wing Airmen and become familiarized with the wing’s innovative accomplishments.
Weatherington’s visit started with a breakfast with Airmen from across the 7th BW, giving him an opportunity to get to know them personally and professionally.
“No matter what end of the ramp you work on, between the herks or bones, whether you fly them, fix them or defend them, mend Airmen, feed Airmen, and all other tasks in between, you are absolutely vital to getting the job done,” said Weatherington. “Thanks to you and your families for staying with the team and for them serving in their own special way.”
The general also visited base units and centers such as the Child Development Center, where he was briefed by the 7th Civil Engineering Squadron on ongoing renovations to expand the facility, which will reduce the waitlist for childcare. The 7th Communication Squadron showcased innovative new programs, such the DYFI (Dyess Wifi) program and GO-COMM, which improves communication for Dyess Airmen on base and in deployed locations. Then the 7th Security Forces Squadron spoke to Weatherington about its base defense operations center.
Before his departure, Weatherington attended Dyess’ Air Force ball to celebrate the service’s 75th anniversary. In his keynote speech, he praised the West Texas community and reflected on his previous assignments to Abilene. The general also reflected on the history of Lt. Col. William Edwin Dyess, the installation's namesake, and recognized multiple Airmen for selflessness and professionalism.
“We come together to celebrate and commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the most powerful Air Force the world has ever known,” said Weatherington. “Each one of you has and will impact the lives of your fellow Airmen in remarkable ways . . . It is my deepest honor to serve beside you, to share the challenges and opportunities of service with you and your families, and to witness your remarkable accomplishments.”
