Afloat Training Group (ATG), San Diego performed a demonstration of their newest battle lab on Oct. 4, in order to show how ship’s on the waterfront train to sustain warfighting efficiency and maintain fleet readiness through training.

The Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Mike Gilday, expresses that learning and improvement through assessment and training will create a more effective fighting force.

"The Chief of Naval Operations, is leading us to adapt, learn and improve through better assessments and innovative means to deliver the best trained Sailors in the world,” said Capt. Christopher G. Follin, Commodore ATG Pacific, “This battle lab improvement provides us the capability to close the gap between our best and worst performers by providing challenging scenarios designed to educate our Sailors to outthink and out fight our adversaries."

Battle labs commonly consist of equipment and gear that can be found aboard naval vessels in order to reflect an operational environment. This enables the team to practice real-world scenarios during phases where the ship may not be operational in a deployable capacity.

"This battle lab has the connectivity necessary to enable our warfighters in San Diego, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest to practice unit level skill sets and integrated operations necessary to compete and win,” said Follin.

The demonstration scenario included a training event conducted by several commands to include the battle lab , Electronic Training Group Pacific, Destroyer Squadron 23, Tyconderoga class guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), Arleigh burke class guided-missile destroyers USS Sterett (DDG-104) , USS Chafee (DDG 90), USS Hopper (DDG 70), and USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53).

“Ships that participated in the demonstration performed training scenarios that include destroyers conducting tomahawk land attack missile, surface action group, and search and attack unit missions along with integration from the marine expeditionary basing operations. All of which were connected via the joint expeditionary warfare lab during the demonstration,” Follin said, “This enables strike group and warfare commanders to be able to utilize the battle lab for staff training anytime before and after ships certify in order to go underway."

Along with the advanced training, the battle lab makes it easier for commands to come together who may not usually have the opportunities to train together during shipboard phases of training and maintenance.

“Ships that wouldn’t traditionally be able to train together are able to join with staff elements and warfare commanders as they train to composite warfare commander roles. These types of training events allow the participants to get together and train where no other opportunities are available until much later in the training continuum,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey York, combat systems officer ATG, San Diego. “This gives commands the opportunity to train to additional scenarios where we can bring additional units together, train and exercise those concepts.”

Efforts to build the battle lab were accomplished with coordination between both civilian contractors and active-duty Sailors working together to ensure success in future training.

“ATG Pacific has nine full-time contracted employees who operate the battle lab. Their expertise spans all warfare areas to include ballistic missile defense and strike warfare among others. The battle lab also facilitates scenario development and warfare commander duties and responsibilities,” said Chief Warrant Officer Travis Ramsey, director of battle lab in-port training ATG San Diego “I’m very proud of our contractor team who assisted in the development of this complex multi-ship event. It’s truly a testament to the professionalism and drive of our civilian counterparts. Events like the one conducted today demonstrate our resolve to answer the fleet commanders call of developing more robust training capabilities while emboldening the fleet’s warfighting mentality.”
