Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division band performed at Forsyth Park during “Phil the Park” in Savannah, Georgia, Oct. 8, 2022. Phil the Park is an event hosted by The Savannah Philharmonic, a professional orchestra, that brings communities together with musical performances and establishes relationships with musicians.

“Phil the Park is the largest outdoor cultural event held in Savannah every year,” said Brad Behr, an education community initiatives manager for the Savannah Philharmonic. “This year, we’re looking to have the 3rd ID Band kickoff the entire event and we’re super excited about it.”

Behr mentioned that this year’s event will be their first time back in Forsyth Park since 2019, making it the Savannah Philharmonic’s 13th year of holding the event. Phil the Park shared the musical talents between the civilians and the military.

“This is our largest event so far, but honestly that doesn’t really phase us,” said Sgt. Lucas Perzyk, a trombone player assigned to the 3rd ID’s band. “It’s more about performing for people and it is a lot more fun when we can feed off the crowd and their energy.”

The 3rd ID band and the other musical groups played various songs in front of a large crowd in the park during the event.

“We get to connect to the civilian musicians in the Savannah Philharmonic and we're able to create a positive relationship with them,” said Sgt. Patrick Jacob, a percussionist assigned to the 3rd ID band.

Perzyk and Jacob both agree that the 3rd ID band is a great way to support Soldiers by boosting morale and to encourage community togetherness.

“We’re using our passion to play music in order to connect to their community because everybody can connect and enjoy music,” said Jacob.
