    Dear Doc Jargon,

I’ve got a burning question. My husband was getting ready to meet the board and he kept saying he had to get his fruit salad updated and a new official photo. I know it isn’t food he was referring to. What the heck is fruit salad and why was it important before his photo could be taken?
I didn’t want to ask him what it was because he talked about it as if I already knew. I’d have even been happy to help if I only knew what it was that he needed.

    Dear Fruitless,
Your husband is talking about the ribbons and medals he’s been awarded during military service. His official Department of the Army photo has to be up to date and the ribbons on his uniform must match the information in his personnel record before he submits his packet to the board to review for promotion. Any inaccuracy could cost him points in the proceedings and place him below other applicants who are vying for the same rank.
The process helps the board members watch for the attention to detail needed with the advancement in rank. It is also tied to the customs and courtesies and heritage of the force. The photo is also evaluated to ensure the applicants know exactly which order those decorations should be in.
I hope your husband did well when he went before the board. If he made it — congratulations on his new rank. If he didn’t, know the competition is tough and there is another chance.

    Signed,
    Doc Jargon
