GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — U.S. Soldiers assigned to 101st Division Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) gathered for an uncasing of colors ceremony at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, Oct. 6, 2022, to signify the start of the brigade’s deployment to Europe.
The ‘Lifeliners’ Brigade, arriving from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, is deployed in support of V Corps, America's forward-deployed corps in Europe, as the first division-level sustainment brigade headquarters to provide mission command of sustainment activities within the V Corps area of operation.
Speaking on the significance of the ceremony itself, Col. Amy Downing, brigade commander, stated “It is said that the very soul of a unit is symbolized in the colors under which it fights. These colors and streamers before you record the glories of those of the past and stand guardian over those who serve in the present, inspiring all of us as we march into the future.”
Receiving orders to Europe less than 90 days ago, the brigade's mission includes providing command and control of sustainment operations throughout the V Corps area of operation, optimizing the sustainment of infrastructure and synchronizing the sustainment enterprise, and to increase interoperability with NATO allies and partners in order to build and maintain combat power.
During the past two years alone, the ‘Lifeliners’ Brigade has proved both their readiness and combat credibility by deploying to Afghanistan, Kuwait, and now countries throughout Europe.
“Throughout all these efforts, one thing has remained constant… and that is the professionalism of our Soldiers and their commitment to the mission,” said Downing.
Charlie Company, 553rd Division Sustainment Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division and the 418th Transportation Company, 61st Quartermaster Battalion, 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command are joining the 'Lifeliners' in support of the mission as well.
“This is one team-one fight,” Downing affirmed. “Together, we will continue the rich traditions of preserving and adding to our history and lineage.”
