The U.S. Air Force offers a variety of benefits to members serving, including a number of education programs designed to assist Airmen in their self-improvement goals.

At Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, the education center is where Airmen can go to take advantage of these benefits and programs. Staff members at the education center are there to assist Airmen in achieving their educational goals through counseling, briefings, test administration and more.

“We help prepare all Airmen for their future after the uniform comes off,” said Dr. Germaine Maduro, 36th Force Support Squadron deputy education and training section chief and military test control officer.

One of the most common reasons an Airman might visit the education center is to start attending college classes.

The Department of Defense allocates $4,500 thousand in Tuition Assistance every fiscal year for each service member to utilize for college tuition.

Speaking with a counselor at the education center is the first step to using TA. Counselors assist Airmen with their education goals, help them understand policies regarding education benefits and help guide them on their education journey.

After discussing educational goals, Airmen must attend a TA brief. There are TA briefs held every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the University of Maryland Global Campus lab on base. These briefs describe what TA is and how Airmen can utilize it.

“Education is important, and the Air Force can help Airmen with the cost,” said Michael Schendel, 36 FSS force development flight chief. “During a four-year enlistment, Airmen are authorized $18,000 thousand in TA. I advise members who come see us to use as much as they can while they’re in the service.”

Another opportunity offered through the education center is the Skillbridge program. Skillbridge is designed to assist Airmen with their transition from the military lifestyle back to civilian life.

One year from an Airman’s date of separation from the military, the Skillbridge application becomes available in the Air Force Virtual Education Center. Airmen can then apply for the program and begin their transition out of the Air Force and into a new internship six months from their separation date.

Military education benefits are designed to improve Airmen’s quality of life during and after service. To learn more about the education benefits offered by the DoD here at Andersen AFB, visit the education center at building 25005 or call 671-366-3170.
