U.S. Marines with 10th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, activated the first regimental fire support battery during a ceremony on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Oct. 7, 2022. This activation will give fire support Marines the opportunity to gain additional capabilities to increase their lethal and non-lethal effects across the battlefield.
"In his plans for Force Design, the Commandant of the Marine Corps directed the re-designation of fire support teams and changes to how they integrate with maneuver forces to plan and coordinate fires,” said Col. Andrew Kelley, the regimental commander of 10th Marines, 2d MARDIV. “This activation marks the beginning of the implementation of that guidance, making this a historical moment for the Marines and Sailors of 10th Marines.”
Fire support is the application of fires that directly support land, maritime, amphibious, and special operational forces to engage the enemy in pursuit of tactical and operational objectives.
As a separate unit from the artillery battalions, we are able to focus our training on fire support teams to bring an all-domain fires capability to the fight, said Maj. Christopher Tyson, the battery commander of Fire Support Battery, 10th Marines, 2d MARDIV.
“The activation of this fire support battery provides us an opportunity to be more lethal,” said Kelley. “Our Marines will be better equipped for the next crisis and better postured to support combat readiness across II Marine Expeditionary Force."
