The 31st Civil Engineer Squadron’s fire department hosted this year’s Fire Prevention Week Oct. 10, 2022 through Oct. 14, 2022 at Aviano Air Base, Italy. Throughout the week the fire department put on events for Airmen, families and allies.

Toward the end of the week, 15 Italian and seven Slovenian air force firefighters observed Aviano AB training facilities.

“The purpose was to show our Slovenian and Italian partners our training resources and capabilities,” said Master Sgt. Timothy Sherrod, 31st Civil Engineer Squadron assistant chief of fire prevention. “The COVID pandemic stalled past partnerships with our Italian partners, so this was an opportunity to rebuild, and we decided to include teams from Slovenia in hopes of creating more training possibilities.”

Throughout the visit, Aviano’s firefighters gave allied visitors a glimpse into Aviano AB’s fire training ability with an aircraft live fire demonstration.

“We gave them a tour of our facilities and training area, conducted briefings about Aviano Fire and Emergency Services capabilities, and closed with a demo of the aircraft fire trainer,” said Sherrod. “The aircraft trainer, along with our structural burn house, was the hot topic. We are all very interested in having their teams come and conduct joint training opportunities alongside 31st Fighter Wing firefighters.”

The overall purpose of the visit was to set up more training opportunities in the future and further develop Aviano’s interoperability with allied nations. One of the benefits of such interoperability is to have unity in incident response operations.

“Our goal is to have annual weeklong firefighting exercises alongside our NATO partners.” said Sherrod.

After the successful exercise and discussion, Aviano Airmen and allies discovered that they have a lot of techniques in common when fighting fires.

“They were very grateful to visit the installation and see all that we had to offer,” said Sherrod. “They are very interested in our firefighting strategies and tactics as well as teaching us how they operate here in Europe. We hope to send teams to their location for training and for them to continue coming here.”
