    7th Army Training Command

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — Teaching future Army leaders doesn’t just include warfighting tactics, administrative procedures and the importance of physical and mental fitness – it includes how to treat Soldiers fairly, ensuring they are given every opportunity to succeed.
Students attending the Basic Leadership Course learn the importance of diversity and inclusion during the Equal Opportunity Leader course held at 7th Army Training Command’s Non-Commissioned Officer Academy.
This is the first time BLC students received direct briefs from EO subject matter experts during the training cycle.
Sgt. 1st Class Lewis Sais, 7ATC Equal Opportunity Advisor, addressed the BLC students during the training session.
“The reason it is important to teach BLC students the impact of Equal Opportunity as they are stepping into leadership positions is because it gives them a jump start on foundational leadership skills,” said Sais. “Think about the company commander and first sergeant course, or the pre-command course they receive this training as senior leaders, so if we can start them off at the first level of leadership they will excel greatly further into their careers.”
The Army’s EO program goal is to ensure fair treatment for military personnel, family members and civilians without focusing on what race, color, gender, religion, age, disability or national origin you align with.
Sgt. Cory-Von Anderson, Student First Sergeant, expressed the importance of the EO training and how he planned to implement those skills as he leads his BLC peers through the training cycle.
“It starts with respect, respecting each other’s views, beliefs, and morals,” said Anderson. “We all come from different backgrounds so you can’t be sure what can trigger and offend someone so I encourage the leaders alongside of me to help set a healthy training environment.”
Leadership at the course is confident that this will not be the last time that BLC students can receive specialize training, said, Master Sgt. David McClain, Basic Leadership Course Branch Chief.
“Having all the agencies who specialize in these topics conduct the briefs ensure that information is received and any questions are answered by experts,” said McClain. “This is our first attempt at this and we would like to make this standard if all goes well.”
