FORT HOOD, Texas— A Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center nurse was recently selected as the third quarter honoree for the Daisy Award, one of 105 nominated for the distinction.
Diana Withers received the recognition at CRDAMC this last quarter at a special ceremony highlighting her extraordinary compassionate care she provides to the patients.
She joined the CRDAMC team in October 2021, and has worked on the 5th Medical/Surgical/Pediatrics Unit ever since.
Withers has worked in nursing for approximately 12 years, first as a certified nurse assistant, then as a licensed practical nurse, before becoming a registered nurse which she has served for about five years.
“I feel that becoming a ‘better’ nurse comes from experience,” she said. “I have held a few positions as an RN, and I am always learning something new. I may not know everything, but I find that as I go along in my journey, there is always someone I can learn from and gain new skills.”
Used by 5,400 healthcare facilities worldwide, the Daisy Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in 1999 but who received exceptional nursing care during his illness.
“I feel blessed, and I am honored to be nominated. It was truly a great surprise,” she said. “I do my job to take care of my patient not to receive awards, so being recognized for doing the thing I love to do is a wonderful feeling.”
