Earlier this month, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit had the privilege of promoting a new sergeant of Marines to its ranks, Sgt. Janie Aguilar. A native of New Braunfels, Texas, Aguilar currently serves in the S-6 section as a 2847 Ground Electronics Telecommunications/Information Systems Maintainer. We sat down with her and asked a few questions about the rewards of her job, life at the MEU, and her perspective on leadership.
What about your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) do you most enjoy?
“As a Comm Marine, I enjoy being able to branch out to every section. My MOS may be Communications but I’m able to coordinate with supply because of my job. I might be specifically designated to telecommunications, but I can also assist with radio communications.”
______
What does your MOS entail and how does it directly impact the 11th MEU’s mission?
“My job as a maintainer includes repairs, modifications, calibrations, accountability, and procurement of ground electronics gear. Here at the MEU, I’ve been able to expand upon my knowledge in my MOS and receive unique opportunities such as earning civilian qualifications and collaborating with many different sections within the unit.
A lot of my job took place before we even got out here, including preparing adapter kits, working with GCSS, making sure that all of our gear is electronically ready, making sure we are coming out with computers that don't have malfunctions. I want to make sure we get the best gear out here.”
_____
Do you have any additional talents or experience that helps aid in your job while with the 11th MEU?
“Here I’ve learned a lot more than I would have learned coming from the schoolhouse. Most of it has to do with learning to coordinate with logistics Marines, our supply section, getting transfers, and making sure those transfers go well.
While I’m here, most of my job is making sure gear stays clean, out of the sun and humidity, and is regularly maintained. If Marines’ laptops aren’t working correctly because we are on different bases and need different hardware, it’s my job to fix that, or if we aren’t using sufficient cables for our equipment.”
_______
What is one thing you would pass on to a newly promoted Corporal as you step into this new chapter of your career, as a sergeant of Marines?
“Having confidence in yourself and everything that you do will help you become the Marine your juniors can look up to. Take every experience that happens to you, good and bad, and let it make you better instead of weighing you down.”
