GDYNIA, Poland - The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) arrived in Gdynia, Poland, for a scheduled brief-stop-for-fuel, Oct. 17, 2022.
Roosevelt moored in Gdynia to take on fuel and stores following its recent participation in Joint Warrior 22-2. During the exercise, the ship conducted three anti-air defense exercises, three anti-submarine exercises and two anti-surface warfare exercises.
“Joint Warrior presented us with the opportunity to interoperate with our Allies in a challenging warfare environment,” said Cmdr. John Mastriani, Roosevelt’s commanding officer. “Having the chance to fight and communicate alongside our partners built our proficiency as a team and strengthened our resolve as an Alliance. Our brief stop in Gdynia enables our continued operations at sea.”
During the brief stop, Roosevelt Sailors were authorized liberty in Poland. This is the first port visit of Roosevelt’s fourth patrol.
“This is a great opportunity for a little rest and relaxation,” said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Melissa Watts. “I’m excited to experience the culture and hike on the beach.”
Roosevelt, forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, began its fourth Forward Deployed Naval Forces-Europe (FDNF-E) patrol Sept. 27 in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe area of operations, employed by U.S. Sixth Fleet to defend U.S., allied and partner interests.
Headquartered in Naples, Italy, NAVEUR-NAVAF operates U.S. naval forces in the U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) areas of responsibility. U.S. Sixth Fleet is permanently assigned to NAVEUR-NAVAF, and employs maritime forces through the full spectrum of joint and naval operations.
